Trip '06 Continued... Sydney Oddyssey Part 1

On my first full day in Sydney, I woke up after about 3 hours of really crappy sleep. (I never sleep well in foreign places) It was about 7am when I woke up, so I decided to spruce myself up a bit and get some breakfast before going for a wander.

Hotel Formule 1 serves a continental breakfast that's worth something around $7 for all you can munch breakfast nosh. The coffee was horrible, though. The sort of coffee that if you add the regular amount of sugar you have with any coffee, it's not enough sugar, and if you add one more, it's too sweet. I don't know how they manage that, but that's how it was. Breakfast was a selection of cereals: weetbix, corn flakes, rice bubbles and weeties (or whatever those brown loking corn flake things are). A toaster is provided, with a selection of breads available... white, wholemeal or multi-grain...as well as that whipped butter stuff and the usual condiments...jam, honey, vegemite, peanut butter. Juice was also on offer, orange or pineapple, if you were feeling a little tropical. The second day I had breakfast there, they also had peach halves available, but they weren't that tasty. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate were also available.

Thee was also a TV in the breakfast room, which was broadcasting news of the mine collapse in Tasmania (which had happened the day before while I was on the train, I think), and also talking about the 10th anniversary of the Port Arthur Massacre.

After breakfast, I set off for my wandering. I wasn't feeling terribly good, though. Whatever I woke up with before leaving Brisbane had developed into a slight cold, and I was all husky sounding. Anyway, while on my wandering, the first cool thing I came across was a rather attractive looking fountain that looks somewhat like a dandelion:

Also, upon leaving my hotel, I realised I had a direct view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House (well, part of it) about 10 metres from the door of the hotel:

Yes, the Opera House is obscured by a stupid building, but you get that. There was also a really funky electric Coke sign up the hill across from the hotel...

I also found an internet cafe...well actually, a convenience store which doubled as an internet cafe ($3 unlimited access! The first net cafe I went to was $6 for an hour! And the internet access at the hotel was one of those vend-o ones that was $2 for 15 minutes...) so I got on to MSN from there and let my housemates know I was still alive.

Then I went for a wander down the main street of King's Cross, Darlinghurst Road. Home of the many, many strip clubs, sex shops and food outlets. There was a big red sighseeing tour bus that I kept seeing, but I wasn't going to pay $30-ish to spend 2 hours on a bus... maybe next time I am in Sydney.

I got some sushi for lunch (which is such a me thing to do), and for once tried a tofu roll:

L-R: Tofu Roll, Salmon and Avocado roll, Teriyaki Chicken roll.

The sushi came with cute little fish shaped soy sauce packets:

(Which were useless, seeing as I don't usually eat my sushi with soy sauce)

Tofu I hadn't tried before, and it has an interesting texture, it's more spongy than cottage cheese, and has a unique flavour to it. While I was eating my lunch, the police picked up a local drunk:

(Probably one of the humorous highlights of being in Sydney)

On my wanderings, I passed a gourmet food place that sold fudge, so I decided to get some, they had a Chocolate fudge that was really evil in both taste and texture. I also realised that I was going to have to get dinner later, and I sized up the various eateries that I was passing.. and eventually decided on a curry place (which were all open until well after midnight) that had a deal of 3 curries and rice for something like $7-8 ...

Butter Chicken, Lamb Korma and some other chicken curry (I think... it might've been beef....or...cat for all I know).. it was tasty, though, and I also got a couple of Onion Vhajji's...

Which, I might add, were oily as fuck (as you can see by the translucency of the paper bag they came in), and cold by the time I got back to the hotel. Blah. They were only $1 each though, and might actually make a decentish snack when served hot.

Also on my wanderings, I spotted this needley spirey thing...that I can't remember the name of...

By the end of the day my feet were all sore, and I was glad to sit down with my aforementioned curry dinner and just pike out and watch TV or try and sleep...

Woo!

I play Aardwolf, which is a text based Multi-User Dungeon game. (MUD for short.) It's an RPG type game, in which you gain skills and such, and experience, killing monsters and generally having a fun time while communicating with others around the world.

Anyhoo, today I remorted, meaning that I played through 200 levels of thiefy goodness, and now am going to play as a cleric. Medved over at Emerald Beast screenied my Superheroing and my Remort message...
